Our Founder's Path

Led by ridges we call home

Milan Tamang founded Chautari Nepal after more than twenty years guiding travelers. We are a guide-owned collective dedicated to slow-paced, deeply integrated Himalayan journeys.

A traditional stone chautari resting platform under a massive banyan tree on a mountain ridge, a dusty trail winding past, soft golden-hour light filtering through leaves, distant Himalayan peaks in mist, 35mm film style.

The Rest Stone

The meaning of a chautari

In the Himalayas, a chautari is a traditional stone resting place built under the shade of a banyan tree. It is where travelers lay down heavy packs, catch their breath, and share stories.

We built our collective to be that exact place of rest and connection. By walking slower and staying in remote villages, we ground our treks in genuine community relationships.

Our Collective Commitment

We operate as a guide-owned collective, ensuring fair wages and direct support to the mountain communities who open their homes to us.

By bypassing high-volume tourism agencies, we keep resources where they belong—directly in the high-altitude villages that sustain our journeys.

The Collective

Guides of the high passes

Our leaders are not just navigators; they are cultural ambassadors who belong to the very valleys you will traverse.

Local Stewardship

Slow Acclimatization

Hearth-Side Hospitality

Every guide is a co-owner of Chautari Nepal, receiving equitable shares that directly fund local village schools and community clinics.

We design itineraries with built-in rest days and gradual elevation gains, prioritizing safety and deep cultural immersion.

Stay in authentic family homestays, enjoying traditional Tamang meals and genuine connections far beyond the standard tourist lodges.
